Santa Claus is Coming to Town…

My mom just called me, at work, to tell me that she was walking down the DVD aisle of Wal-Mart with my aunt, and she needed a Christmas list from me…

Mom: “You said you were watching a lot of the series stuff in Netflix lately. They have Deadwood.”
Me: “I just finished Deadwood.”
Mom: “Did you like it?”
Me: “I thought it was pretty good, yeah.”
Mom: “So you liked it.”
Me: “Yes, but don’t buy that. I already watched it.”
Mom: “What about the Sopranos?”
Me: “Mom, don’t buy me a series that I’m only going to watch once when I can get it from Netflix. That’s why I have Netflix!”
Mom: “What about Six Feet Under?”
Me: “Tell you what, I would like to get the Family Guy series on DVD. I don’t have any of them, so you could pick any season at all and it’d be something I’d watch more than once.”
Mom: “What about Alias?”
Me: “Mom, are you just picking up every box and reading me the title? Maybe you could get me a Playstation 2 game. I’d like Guitar Hero’s 80’s edition.”
Mom: “Oooooh, Dark Angel! I really liked that one.”
Me: (Internal sigh) “No.”
Mom: “What about Buffy? Did you ever…”
Me: “No.”
Mom: “This one is called V is for Vengeance.”
Me: “Vendetta, Mom. And I don’t own that one. But I’d like it.”
Mom: “How about Pirates?”
Me: “Mom, I’m at work. I don’t have my entire DVD catalog handy, but I think I have the Pirates series.”
Mom: “No, this is a movie. It has Johnny Depp in it.”

Thank God I’m staying in a good mood, because this conversation would have thrown me over the edge.

  1. You know, as much as I jokingly complain about this conversation with my mother, which happens every year in some variation, you’re exactly right. It wouldn’t be Christmas without it, and finally realizing that might just be the cure I need for the annual December Depression. She’s my mother, and I love her to pieces, and I wouldn’t trade this conversation for anything normal in the whole world.
